It is a dog of English origin, quite “new”, of harmonious appearance, elegant and graceful but also endowed with a relatively powerful structure that makes it one of the fastest. It is a dog quite contradictory in its character because it likes the comfort of the life in the house but it becomes crazy and fast hardly has the possibility to be able to run in wide open spaces. There is practically all colors, with or without white spots, being penalized the specimens too high.
This breed is the pride of the English breeders who about a century ago, wanted a fast and agile dog, more robust than the Italian greyhound and less bulky than the Greyhound. It can be said perfectly, that the experiment has been a success since the Whippet, in a few years, has strengthened in the United Kingdom and then spread to all continents. In the creation of this dog have contributed the smooth-haired Fox terrier and the Greyhound: the resulting product has taken from the former the passion for hunting and its robust appearance, and the second, elegance and speed.
With these characteristics, it is properly used for hunting the hare, where it is skillful and fast to the point of capturing the animal in a few meters, which has motivated the name of “Snop-dog” which, translated literally means , Precisely, dog-shot. Quickly these qualities have taken to the giving life, in this way, to very interesting races. However, its characteristics of grace and elegance have made it an excellent companion dog, more robust than the Italian Greyhound, who likes to live between cushions and armchairs, occupying a tiny space and requiring minimal care for cleaning.
These qualities have made him very popular and today the Whippet is always present in the main canine exhibitions, being frequently, and absolute winner of all the races. In England and America, races are organized, only for Whippet that obtains almost the same success of the best known and spectacular Greyhound. At amateur level, the Whippet runs in almost all nations, followed by an ever greater number of enthusiasts and breeders, reaching a speed of almost 65 km per hour.
At first glance and superficial examination, the Whippet seems a reduction of the largest Greyhound, but after careful observation it is perceived that it is very different from its former parent. It combines perfectly the symmetrical aspect and muscular development with great elegance coupled with a certain grace of movement. Its main features are: long and thin head, bright eyes with lively expression, small ears, thin, folded, rose-shaped, long neck, muscular and elegantly arched, chest well developed, wide and deep, the Wide and solid back that marks a harmonious arch in its superior profile and that is united with the back, the rump and the birth of the tail, the limbs lean and muscular, the long and sharp tail and, finally, the affectionate character.
